ObesityMedoroga — classical name in Ayurveda

Overview
In Ayurveda, obesity is known as Sthaulya. It is characterized by the excessive accumulation of fat in the body, leading to discomfort in daily activities and potential adverse health effects. This condition is primarily linked to imbalances in Kapha dosha, Rasa (plasma/lymph), and Meda (fat tissue).
Sthaulya can manifest with increased body mass, a Body Mass Index (BMI) greater than 25 kg/m², and associated symptoms such as a pendulous abdomen, buttocks, and breasts. Other common signs include shortness of breath upon exertion, general weakness, excessive perspiration, and increased hunger.
Ayurveda views obesity not just as excess weight but as a complex lifestyle disorder influenced by dietary habits, lack of physical activity, and even mental states. Factors like overeating, consuming heavy, sweet, cold, or unctuous foods, day sleep, and a lack of mental and physical exercise are considered significant contributors to its development.

Therapeutic Approaches in Ayurveda
Ayurvedic treatment for Sthaulya (obesity) focuses on lifestyle modifications, dietary adjustments, and the use of specific herbs and formulations. Management begins with dietary restrictions and physical exercise, alongside lifestyle changes. For individuals presenting with features of Ama (toxins) and impaired digestion, treatments like Trikatu powder or a mixture of Haritaki, Guduchi, and Shunthi may be administered. Those experiencing constipation and low appetite are often treated with laxatives such as Triphala powder or Haritaki powder.
Medicated warm water, such as Musta Siddha Jala or Triphala Siddha Jala, is encouraged as a beverage instead of plain water. Various herbal formulations in the form of Churna (powder), Vati (tablet), and Kwatha (decoction) are utilized. Commonly prescribed medicines include Triphala, Musta, Haritaki, Katuki, Vidanga Churna, Gomutra Haritaki Vati, Phalatrikadi Kwatha, Kanchanara Vati, Guggulu, Triphala Guggulu, and Medohara Guggulu. For specific conditions like chronic constipation with Kapha dominance, Arogyavardhini, Abhyarishta, Katuki powder, or Gomutra Haritaki Vati may be recommended.
Lifestyle recommendations include waking up early, engaging in regular and moderate physical exercises like brisk walking or playing outdoor games, and incorporating mental exercise. Dietary advice emphasizes fresh, healthy foods at regular intervals, a low-fat, high-fiber diet, and plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits. Grains like barley (Yava), maize, and millet are encouraged, along with puffed grains (Laja) and specific lentils like Moonga Daal and Tuvar Daal. Certain foods to be avoided include heavy fried foods, black gram, refined foods, potatoes, curd, milk, and fermented items.
