DandruffKshudra / Darunaka — classical name in Ayurveda

Overview
Dandruff, referred to as Kshudra or Darunaka in Ayurveda, is a common ailment affecting the scalp. It is characterized by the excessive shedding of dead skin cells, often accompanied by itching, dryness, and flaking.
According to Ayurvedic principles, Kshudra/Darunaka arises from an imbalance or vitiation of the Vata and Kapha doshas. Vata dosha imbalance can lead to dryness and itching, while Kapha dosha imbalance may contribute to flaking and a feeling of heaviness on the scalp.
Factors such as stress, poor dietary habits, inadequate hygiene, and certain environmental influences can aggravate these doshic imbalances, exacerbating the condition. Ayurvedic treatment focuses on pacifying the vitiated doshas and restoring the natural health and balance of the scalp.

Therapeutic Approaches in Ayurveda
Ayurvedic management of Kshudra/Darunaka focuses on pacifying the aggravated Vata and Kapha doshas and restoring the scalp's health. This often involves a combination of internal and external treatments tailored to the individual's constitution and the specific imbalance.
Internal treatments may include the use of herbal formulations designed to balance the doshas and purify the blood. These remedies aim to address the root cause of the condition from within, promoting overall well-being and scalp health.
External therapies are crucial for direct relief and scalp rejuvenation. Shirodhara, a procedure involving a continuous stream of warm medicated oil poured onto the forehead, can help calm the nervous system and pacify Vata. Nasya, the administration of herbal oils or powders through the nasal passages, is also employed to clear channels and balance doshas affecting the head and scalp.
Local applications of herbal pastes made from ingredients like Neem, Tulsi, and Brahmi are recommended to alleviate itching, reduce inflammation, and cleanse the scalp. These topical treatments provide symptomatic relief and support the healing process.

Traditional Preparations
Neem Leaf Paste for Scalp Application
Grind the fresh neem leaves with a little water to form a smooth paste. Apply this paste directly to the scalp.
Leave the paste on the scalp for about 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Use this home remedy for dandruff a few times a week.
Bhringraj and Amla Hair Oil
Gently heat the coconut oil in a pan. Add the Bhringraj and Amla powders. Simmer on low heat for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, ensuring the powders do not burn. Strain the oil through a fine cloth, discarding the residue. Store the infused oil in a clean bottle.
Massage this oil gently into the scalp. Leave it on for at least an hour, or overnight, before washing off with a mild cleanser. This can be used as a natural treatment for dandruff.
